Top 3 Issues Affecting Trucking Companies

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

1 - The Rate of Change - Have You Noticed How Fast Things Are Changing These Days in Our Industry?  Seems Like By the Time You Take the Steps to Comply With New Government Regulations, They Are Already Talking on the News About How Your Steps Are Outdated and You Should Really Be Focusing on the Next Latest and Greatest.  This Rate of Change is Effecting All Facets of Business and Requiring Successful Business Owners to React and Forecast Quicker Than Ever Before in Order to Stay Ahead.

As With All of These Issues, There is No Solution I Can Post Here to Make a Light Go on in Your Head.  They Are Complex Issues That Can Be Addressed At Many Different Angles.  I Will Provide a Direction in Which Us at Prime Trailer Leasing Feel is the Correct Way to Go.

Solution: The Direction We’re Headed in is a Focus on Efficiency.  With the Combination of Better Business Practices and Technology We Are Able to Process, Analyze and Create Information and Change at a Closer Pace To What The World Appears to Be Moving Towards.  Better Business + Technology = Efficiency = Competitive Edge and Success

2-  Government Regulations on Environment and Safety - With the EPA, FMCSA, and DOT Requiring More and More Regulations That Force Change, It is Critical to Fully Understand The Changes in Our Industries Dominating Regulations.  For Example, the New EPA SmartWay Deadline is Becoming a Huge Cost Factor for Most Trucking Companies Regardless of the Compliance Path They Chose.  Likewise, CSA Regulations Are Increasing Costs for Hiring Drivers Due to the Higher Standards of Health and Safety Brought Forth Through the  7 BASIC Rules.

Solution: To Remain Simple I’ll Call the Solution Education. Awareness of the Regulations Can Often Equip Your Company With The Proper Foresight to Avoid the Negative Repercussions of the Regulations.  Proper Education Leads to Better Budgets and Forecasts and HR Decisions.

3- Supply and Demand of Trailers – Ever Since the Downturn in Our Economy in 2008, We Have Had a National Trailer Shortage.  This Was Caused by All of Us Holding Onto Our Trailers and Not Buying New Trailers For a Few Years.  New Trailer Production Slowed and Consequently Had a Ripple Effect on the Trailer Supply over the Last Few Years.  In Addittion, with Scrap Prices So High and Many Storage Trailers Becoming Scrapped, the Local Cartage-Type Equipment Has Also Been Low in Supply.

Solution: Nothing Short of a Stable Economy Will Solve the Fluctuations in Trailers, and That Isn’t Likely to Happen Anytime Soon.  In Reality, a Better Solution Would to Adapt Your Business Model to Be More Flexible in Terms of Fluctuations in Trailer Supply.  This Can be Done in Many ways such as Better Maintaining Your Current Equipment to Improve it’s Life or Making Repairs and Adaptations to Your Equipment so It Lasts Longer.  Many Trucking Companies are Holding on to Their Equipment for 2012 and Putting Money Into Them Instead of Buying New as the Prices Are Still Higher Than Desired.  Adapting Your Business Model is Key to Prevent a Loss in Revenue Due to Lack or Surplus of Equipment.  As Heraclitus Says, The Only Constant in This World is Change.

Semi Trailer Rentals: Swing Door vs Roll Door Options

Monday, August 8th, 2011

When customers call us with their semi trailer needs, we typically ask them whether they need swing door or roll doors for their rental, and most have no idea which they should use over the other.  We wanted to outline a few quick pros and cons to swing door dry vans and roll door dry vans in hopes to provide you with better information to make more efficient decisions in relation to your semi trailer rental needs.

Swing Door Pros

  • Longer Life – Swing Doors tend to last longer, because they break less often.  A little WD-40 is usually all you need to fix a roll door 95% of the time.
  • Less Maintenance – In Addition to lasting longer, Swing Doors typically have less maintenance and thus are more cost efficient for you over your rental period.
  • Majority Market Share – Most Semi Trailers have Swing Doors for the above reasons, and thus are the majority of the market.  This is an advantage because most places accommodate swing doors due to their popularity.

Roll Door Pros

  • Loading Docks – With a Roll Door, you can back right up to the loading dock, and unload your freight.  Swing Doors you would have to stop, open them up, lock them in place, and then back up carefully.  Every minute counts when moving freight, and this is an added benefit to Roll Doors.
  • Safer – Roll Doors don’t ever swing open and hit people, or the hinges don’t get stuck and knock out your teeth during the cold winter months.  Roll Doors are on fixed tracks and have a single hinge that locks it in place; a safer option statistically speaking
  • Versatile - A Roll door can go anywhere a swing door can go, but not the other way around.  If you are unsure which you need, you can’t go wrong with a roll door on this point.

Cons of Swing or Roll Doors

  • Roll Door Maintenance – Roll doors have more moving parts and break more often than a swing door thus making them a little more expensive to rent and repair.
  • Swing Doors Less Versatile – Swing Doors are not as versatile or specialized as a Roll Door, so you may be limited with what you can do with a swing door at times.

Regardless of whether you rent a swing or a roll door, we hope you feel comfortable to call and talk it through with us at Prime Trailer Leasing.  We make a huge point to be helpful instead of pushy down here at Prime, and we feel that is the reason so many people come to us with questions about semi trailer sales or rentals across Colorado, Nevada, and Utah.

Scrap Metal Prices Continue to Rise

Scrap Pricing way above average

Semi Trailer Scrappers

Over the last few months scrap prices for aluminum and steel have steadily increased creating a strong opportunity for the scrapping of old semi trailers.  With aluminum scrap  at .83/lb  and steel at 325/GT  there is a growing opportunity for scrapping companies and even companies like Prime Trailer Leasing, to get rid of some of our older equipment and get a decent price for it.

Scrap prices have gone up this past year due to several factors:

  • Supply of Raw Materials: In general supply for these raw materials like aluminum and steel have decreased.  Consumers and Companies have both decided to hold on to their old equipment much longer than usual, which in conjunction with the finished goods shortages, has created a strong scrap market.
  • Shortage of Equipment: There is a shortage for everything from construction equipment to semi trailers to building materials for skyscrapers.  The last recession of 2008 was a key factor in the creation of this shortage.  To read more on this, view our blog on The Shortage or Semi Trailers New and Used

As scrap prices continue to rise, now is s good time to look into trading out your old equipment for new equipment.  Now is a great time to sell your used semi trailers as they have some of the highest values in recent history.  If you are looking to trade over your old equipment, give us a call and we can help get your trailer sold and get you into new more durable equipment to better serve your storage trailer needs in Colorado, Reno, and Sale Lake City.

SkyBitz GPS Tracking Proves Useful

Skybitz GPS Semi Trailer TrackingGPS tracking units on semi trailers have been a growing trend for the last few years in the rental industry.  Companies and customers alike have been finding value in the ability to track their own equipment in a very clear and accurate fashion.  We have chosen to upgrade some of our newer semi trailers and attach a GPS tracking unit to the trailer.    We have found a lot of uses for these GPS tracking units:

  • Increased reaction time to locating our Semi Trailers
  • The Ability to Forecast Arrival Times on Our Semi Trailers
  • Bigger Companies are Attracted to the Skybitz GPS Trackers Due to the Increase in Effeciency they Achieve with Their Rented Semi Trailers

We have found these to be a great asset to our late model semi trailers in our rental fleet.  We are excited to learn and use their functionality.  These GPS units by Skybitz do much more than just track where your trailer asset is currently located.  From knowing whether a trailer is loaded or unloaded, to whether the doors are opened or closed – these Skybitz really have a value to them on both sides.

In our Salt Lake City Location, we have these on all of our Over the Road 53 trailers because they provide such useful value to our customers.  In Denver, we are adopting them as well given the strong results we have seen out in Salt Lake City.

The Semi Trailer business, when done correctly, can be a win win scenario for the customer as well as the company.  When we find a quality service like Skybitz, we can use the service to make a little money, and save the customer tons of money.  It’s what we like to do at Prime Trailer Leasing.

Have You Adopted GPS Tracking for Your Semi Trailers Yet?
