Are We Any Safer? – Safety in Transportation Industry

Transportation Safety

It seems that every day a new regulation is coming out about safety in the transportation industry and rightfully so. Transportation is dangerous and it’s important to handle the risk as best as possible. However, a recent study came out by the DOT that shows a 9% increase in trucking related fatalities in 2010. This was the first increase since 2004 and was up from 2009 which was a record low for the industry since it was first tracked in 1975.

Though difficult to pinpoint, it is certainly a upsetting figure to see. With advancements in safety technology, better awareness than we’ve ever had, and other positive factors, the rate increases. One argument to the cause of the increase is simply due to more people being on the road than ever before. The DOT recorded a decrease in 2010 in number of overall miles travelled. This seems to discount the fact that more people are on the road.

So what other reasons could be to blame for this increase? Some believe that the increase in mobile technology is related to the incidents. Though a recent bill was passed to ban mobile phones for truck drivers and other CMV drivers, the general public still has not passed legislation that is nationwide. This could certainly be one of the factors that has been responsible for the extra 295 fatalities in 2010.

Awareness is The Key

Regardless of the increase in regulations and increases in accidents, we have to focus on what matters the most, awareness. Awareness is really just a fancy word for telling your friends that this stuff matters. Accidents kill thousands each year and change peoples lives forever. It matters. Simply using our channels, networks, and voices can help make a profound difference on the impact and change surround transportation safety.

Help us spread the word by sharing this post with others, or writing a post yourself. If you’re aware, it’s time to help others become more.

Smartway Compliant Equipment

Smartway Compliant EquipmentSmartway Compliance as it Relates to Fuel and Energy Efficiency is Having a Big Result on the Semi Trailer Industry.  The Push for Smartway Compliant Equipment is Causing Many Fleets to Either Upgrade Their Equipment to New or Late Model Equipment,  Or Invest More Money Into Their Already Aged Equipment to Meet the Compliance Needs on a Fuel and Energy Efficient Level.

Companies Are Looking Into Adding Low Rolling Resistance Tires, Side Skirts, and Rear Gap Fairings to Increase Their Efficiency on Their Trailers in Hopes to Reach the Smartway Compliance Standards on Their Equipment.  The Problem Comes When The Equipment Needed to Upgrade Isn’t Worth Investing On Because of Age of Equipment.   The Upgrades Can Get Expensive Quickly Even for  a Late Model Road Trailer not to Mention Older Equipment and the Cost to Upgrade.  Those Kinds of Capital Investments Can Be Very Expensive and Squelch Your Productivity.

The Way Out of Tying Up Capital

If You’re Getting Ready to Upgrade Your Fleet, But Can’t Seem to Justify the Cost in This Economic Climate, Renting May be a Better Option.  We Rent Late Model Equipment With Fuel Efficient Gap Fairings and Can Upgrade Additional Trailers to Meet Your Needs.  Investing All That Capital in Buying New Equipment Can Slow Down Production Hurting Your Profit.  Renting Provides Operation Flexibility to Meet the Flexible Needs of the Customer.  We’d Love to Start a Relationship With You and Your Company if You are Looking for Smartway Compliant Equipment.

Nationwide Cell Phone Ban May Include Hands Free Devices

Texting and DrivingDistracted Driving is Dangerous Driving

That is the Premise and Reasoning for the Recent Nationwide Ban of All Cell Phones for Commercial Motor Vehicles.  According to Transport Topics, Most Carriers are Not Happy with the Current Ban.   Most Agree About the Dangers of Driving and Texting, and Driving Without a Hand Free Device, But They Feel it is a Bit Excessive to Regulate all Cell Phone Usage.

Now the NTSB is Suggesting That All Cell Phone Usage, Including Hands Free Devices Be Banned for CMV’s.  This Poses Logistical Issues on Regulating This Ban as A Fair Amount of Companies Let Drivers Use Their Own Personal Cell Phones and Can Not Access Their Phone Records Without The Drivers Consent.

For Most, This is a Frustrating Issue.  Commercial Drivers Are Being Targeted First in This Cell Phone Ban, Including Hands Free, Before Civilian Drivers, With Worse Driving Records.  Most Carriers Are Making and Have Made Concerted Efforts Before the Ban Even Came Into Place to Reduce The Amount of Distracted Drivers.  The Laws Now Increase That Effort Due to Fines and Loss of Licenses Are in Effect.  While Most Don’t Have an Issue With Ending Up With a Nationwide Cell Phone Ban of This Nature, They Feel Like They Are Being Targeted Before the Bigger Problem.

Safety First

Regardless of the Profiling Concerns, None Can Deny it is Safer to be Off a Cell Phone While Driving and it Reduces Driver Distraction.  At Prime Trailer Leasing, Our Drivers Use a Nextel Radio to Communicate to One Another and Are Hands Free When on the Phone.  We Have Been Operating Under Those Standards for the Last Few Years Because Our Drivers Safety and The Safety of Others is of Upmost Importance to Us.  Whatever Comes Down the Road on This Ruling, We Will Stand Behind it Because Safety Comes First.  We All Operated Before Without Cell Phones on the Road, We Can Learn to Do it Again.

HOS Lawsuits Expected – No One Pleased

HOS LawsuitsWho Won?

The current ruling of HOS laws back on December 22, 2011 has caused an uproar in the transportation industry.  It has been a very controversial ruling and has been the cause for much debate.  When FMCSA Laws changed the total work week from 82 total hours to 70 hours, it caused the platform for HOS laws to be reformed and offer an opportunity to change.

With companies, drivers, industry experts, special interest groups and more all disagreeing  with the new HOS rulings,  analysts expect for the law to be challenged in court and a revision or change to take place.  One side feels the laws ruin productivity, while others believe it is a useful change in part, but drivers rights are being chastised.

The ATA has not decided whether to file a lawsuit yet on this new law planned to take effect 2013.  We will all watch closely as this controversy over the new ruling takes shape.

Cell Phone Ban Nationwide – Is It a Good Idea?

It’s Dangerous

10 years and counting of data to support the push for a country wide ban on all cell phone usage while driving in cars, commercial or private has been brought to attention with help from Deborah Hersman, chairman of NTSB.  Distraction based accidents have become more and more prevalent since the introduction of smartphones and older cell phones.  Ray La Hood seeks to outlaw all calls, including ones made on hands-free devices because the danger and risk is still too high.

Is it Possible?

In today’s ridiculously fast world and the non stop interaction we seem to have with electronic devices and the value they provide to us, is it possible to cut out the time in your car to simply driving?  The average commute to work round-trip is 48 minutes.  48 minutes of phone calls a day could mean the difference between getting to spend time with the family, or having to work late.  It could mean the difference in closing that deal before the weekend hits.  With the rest of the world on cell phones, it’s hard to slow yourself to a different pace even if it means safer roads for everyone.

Where it Starts

It may be tough to stop, but it is something that needs to be done.  As it stands right now, it is just too dangerous for you and others on the road with you.  So how can we start working this out of our lives?  We’ve outlined a few ideas that you could do that is still useful and safe on the road.

  • Listen to a Podcast – I personally listen to at least 1 podcast a day on my drive home from work.  I plug it into my stereo and pick a podcast (before I leave) and then enjoy the opportunity to learn and educate myself instead of killing myself on the drive home
  • Gather Your Thoughts – In an ever increasing world of busyness, taking 20-30 minutes to just gather your thoughts for the day, can really make a difference in your effeciency and productivity for the day.
  • Do Nothing – an idea that could truly change the world.  RELAX!  It is so relaxing and stress relieving to have the radio off, and nobody bothering you for your commute.  All it takes is a few calm breathes and a committed mind to doing nothing and the stress can literally melt right off your mind.

Safe Driving!

We hope you found this useful, if you ever need to rent a semi trailer, Prime Trailer Leasing has excellent equipment and value safety above all else in our equipment quality.  Drive Safe Out There!
