Social Media in the Transportation Industry

Does It Actually Work

Social Media in the Transporation IndustryThe Transportation Industry Covers So Many Different Companies, Applications and Permutations That is is Difficult to Communicate if the Industry as a Whole Finds Value Out of Social Media. However, For This Article, I Will Do My Best to Make it Relevant to All in the Transportation Industry.

Most Transportation Companies Are Likely B2B Companies. Concerns Have Risen in the Last Few Years on the Effectiveness of B2B Social Media Marketing. However, Recent Reports Show That B2B Social Media Marketing Can Be Extremely Effective in Creating Increased Exposure, Web Presence, and Lead Generation.

Why?  Because Social Media Has Broken Down the Corporate Barrier of B2B Advertising and Made, in Effect, Everything B2C.  People are People Regardless of the Business They Work With, and They Respond in the Same Way on Social Media Sites as Individual Consumers.

What Social Media Sites Are Effective?

Though a Tough Question to Answer for a Broad Industry, There are Sites That Tend to Perform Better Over Others Due to the Nature of the Industry and Your Target Market.

  • Linked In – The Transportation Industry Performs A Lot of B2B Functions and Thus a Network with a Focus on Proffesionalism and Business Development Would Be the Likely Candidate as The Best Site to Connect.
  • Twitter – When You Are Going for Reach and Exposure, Twitter Reaches the Masses Like No Other Social Media Site Can Offer.  Though Engagement Tends to Be Lower, Exposure Can Increase Substantially For Companies with Active Twitter Accounts.
  • Facebook – The Giant That it is, Facebook Creates a Great Opportunity to Engage in Customers Personal Lives As You Company Increasing the Likelihood They Will Think of You as They Begin Your Desired Decision Making Process.
  • Foursquare – If You Are Involved With Truckers as Your Target Market, This Location Based Social Media Site Has a Substantial Following With Truckers Given its Addictive Game UI and It’s Geographic Centered Features.  It’s Only Natural Truckers Would Enjoy This Type of Social Media Site – They Are Hardly Ever in the Same Place From Day to Day.

The Most Important Factors

There Are Really 3 Factors About Your Social Media Campaign Within the Transportation Industry That Will Make the Biggest Result for the Dollars and Time Spent.

  • Know Your Target Market – Any Good Marketing Director Needs to Know Who His/Her TM is, What They Like, Where They Visit, etc.  The More You Know Their Interests in and Out of Work, the Better Chance You Will Have to Engage With Them.  Engage With Your Social Media Fans and You Will Increase Exposure, Lead Generation, and Brand Loyalty That Can Not Compare With Any Other Advertising Form for Its Cost.
  • Choose Your Social Media Sites Wisely – Just Cause Everyone is On Facebook Doesn’t Mean it’s Right for You.  With Your Knowledge of Your Target Market, Find What Sites They Are on and Engage Them There.
  • Engage Organically – So Many Companies Decide to Make Social Media Part of Their Online Marketing Campaign, But Then Fail Miserably When They Do Nothing More Than Shameless Promotions and Generic Messages to Their Readers.  You Wouldn’t Talk to Another Person Face to Face With a Script in Hand and Only Have the Conversation Be You Talking and Them Getting Bored Would You?  The Same Idea Applies to Social Media.  It’s a Conversation Between One Human and Another – Treat is As Such.

5 Tips for Tweeting Semi Trailers and Transportation News

It’s Semi Trailers, Why Use Twitter and Other Social Media?

If you’re on the up and up, you understand how social media is an incredible resource for business owners and customers alike in the transportation industry.  Twitter helps you communicate quickly and react well to customer concerns.  In our industry, it has taken on some different features that have proved to be useful as well.  Twitter is used as an information highway for useful articles, trailer sales both selling and buying, and a networking tool that helps people find products and services for their business.

I want to outline few tips for anyone using twitter that is in the transportation industry; specifically sales and rental of commercial semi trailers.

1 – Ask More Questions, Give More Answers

I see a lot of companies use twitter as a platform to broadcast everything they do well.  It is much more effective to reach out to companies and learn what is important to them and what they are doing on twitter.

Prime Trailer Leasing picks a few companies each week to learn about and talk to them so we can grow our relationship, whether mutually beneficial for us or not.

2- Tweet Daily

There is no magic formula for increasing your followers, so consistency is important.  Interaction increases the more consistent you are.  If you keep up with it, you will see results – It’s pick and shovel work, just like anything else.

3- If There Were a Secret Formula….

Hash Tags would be the key variable.  Hash tags provide a way for you to segment yourself to the customers you are reaching out to.  Prime Trailer Leasing provides articles on the transportation industry and always adds the #Transportation hash tag at the end so it is easy to find.

This is also a useful tool for beginner twitter accounts as a hash tag works to get your name out there beyond your current followers.

4- Experimentation

Experimenting with your tweets can be very beneficial and is rarely harmful.  You will learn most of your twitter skills through trial and error, so don’t be afraid to try new things and strategies to get interaction.  If it’s an ineffective tweet, it will just be overlooked.  If you try something and it works, you will see positive results and you’re left for the better.

5- Don’t Forget to Let People Know Who You Are

I said earlier that it’s not about you, it’s about the other person.  However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t reply to people’s tweets that are related back to you.  When this is done tastefully, you tap into the most powerful aspect of twitter, relationship marketing.

Twitter can be a very powerful tool if used correctly and consistently.  If you have a twitter account, give us a follow and tell us you found us through our blog.  If you don’t have a twitter account, then why are you reading this!?  Go get a twitter account, you’ll be glad you did.

Here are some other helpful links for beginner tweeps.
