Is Government Involvement, More Hurtful Than Helpful?
New HOS rules have just been passed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The new rules have allowed drivers to continue to operate for 11 hours a day, but has limited the overall workweek from 80 hours to 72. You can see all the new rulings for yourself in the 212 page final ruling document released on December 22 by FMCSA, if you want to read them in their entirety.
How will these changes will affect the semi trailer leasing and sales industry, and even more than that, is FMCSA even considering the whole picture when making these changes to the law. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood claims that, “This final rule will help prevent fatigue related truck crashes and save lives. Truck drivers deserve a work environment that allows them to perform their jobs safely.” Now, I can’t argue with the intent to make the road safer and treat drivers fairly, but it seems industry insiders find this ruling an unproductive means to that end. Bill Graves, President of the American Trucking Associations states, “Unfortunately, along the way, FMCSA twisted data and, as part of this final rule, is using unjustified causal estimates to justify unnecessary changes.”
All you have to do is pay a little attention to the daily news to see politicians and media twist and turn facts, stats, and the like, to make the end result benefit their point of view. Now they may have pure intentions, or they may not, but it’s up to you to make that call based on facts. For those of you following all the HOS changes I encourage you not only to see how the changes affect you, but also the industry and the truth. The law keeps our society civil and organized, but this is suppose be a government by and for the people so we can’t simply sit back and let those who don’t understand our needs make all the decisions.
What Do You Think?
