Used Semi Trailer: Why Are They So Expensive

Used Semi Trailer Prices

We get a lot of calls each day for individuals and businesses wanting to purchase used semi trailers.  We get calls for used dry vans, used flatbeds, and used refrigerated vans more often than we even used to in the past.  When we talk to our customers and quote them a price, they are often confused as why they are so expensive in comparison to what they remember them costing 2 years ago.

While we try to provide the best possible pricing in Colorado on used semi trailers, we are subject to pricing and demand coming directly from our suppliers as well.  I want to outline the reasons why pricing has increased in the used semi trailer market over the last year.

  1. Semi Trailers are a Commodity: Just like the price of fuel, semi trailers are subject to supply and demand and their pricing is directly correlated with the current demand and its inverse supply.  It is important to read publications such as Transport Topics, or local business journals, as it effects the pricing of used trailers across the nation.
  2. New Semi Trailer Shortage – Currently in the new trailer market, manufacturers can not keep up with the recent surge of demand for new semi trailers, and thus carriers and companies are turning to used equipment.
  3. No Capital for New Equipment – Most companies are tight on capital right now, since the economy is just starting to turn around, and businesses are choosing to hold on to old equipment longer which creates a gap in the supply chain for used equipment thus increasing the cost to purchase a used semi trailer.

What To Do About It

So unless your Donald Trump or Warren Buffet, you don’t have much say in the above factors.   The best course of action is to do your homework, talk to a experienced sales professional at Prime Trailer Leasing or elsewhere and make a purchase that you can stand behind.  Also understand that you may be experiencing sticker shock.

Most of the customers who say our prices are too high, call back a day or two later saying we actually have the lowest prices in Colorado (not to our surprise) and we explain to them that this is a common occurrence at Prime Trailer Leasing.

We hope this helps bring some understanding and insight to you on the used semi trailer industry, and what is currently effecting the pricing in the markets.
